THE Befriending SCHEME

Residents who choose to take part in our Befriending Scheme are paired with one or two Griffin students. Our students visit their residents weekly, sharing conversation, companionship, and stories about what’s happening locally and in their own lives.

This simple but meaningful connection helps build an intergenerational bond - something that’s often missing in modern society - and fosters a genuine sense of community and mutual understanding.

PAST EVENTS

Over the years, our “in-events” have included favourites such as Fireworks Night and the much-loved “Night at the Races.”

Our “out-events” take residents to exciting destinations across London, including a boat trip along the Thames and our annual Christmas meal at the Marriott. These outings are especially cherished, as they allow Shaftesbury Lodge residents to continue enjoying the many wonderful experiences their city has to offer.

For many, these opportunities wouldn’t be possible without the social and practical support provided by our students - something that makes the Griffin Community Trust truly special.

ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS

Our programme of group activities and events runs each year from September to May, organised by small teams of Griffin House students.

Every month, a different group of students plans either an “in-event” - held in the common room at Shaftesbury Lodge - or an “out-event” at places of interest further afield.

Whether close to home or out in the community, these gatherings offer Shaftesbury residents the chance to socialise, have fun, and strengthen connections with their neighbours and the Griffin students alike.

TOYNBEE HALL

The Griffin Community Trust maintains a long-standing partnership with the day centre at Toynbee Hall in Aldgate. Each week, Griffin students host Wednesday afternoon sessions from 2–4pm, with every student volunteering once per term.

These sessions bring together elderly residents of Tower Hamlets with our medical and dental students from Barts and The London, providing an opportunity to share tea, conversation, and laughter - covering topics from the Cray twins to the latest football news!

We also take part in Toynbee Hall community events, including activities like singing and sewing, and we’re proud to invite Toynbee visitors to many of our own occasions - most notably the highlight of our year, the Annual Garden Party.
