Do the students live with the elderly residents?

No. The students live in Griffin House, which is adjacent to Shaftsbury Lodge where the residents live.

What is the role of a Griffin Student?

Griffin students play a vital role in building meaningful connections with the elderly residents of Shaftesbury Lodge. Each student is expected to spend at least one hour per week with their allocated resident, forging strong friendships and enjoying time together both one-on-one and during group social activities.

Students are also expected to attend our events, which take place twice a month and range from games nights at Shaftesbury Lodge to afternoon tea at the Dorchester.

Each student contributes to the Trust by organising two events over the course of the year, usually in small groups of three, in addition to participating in other local volunteering, such as sessions at Toynbee Hall in Aldgate once per term.

Some students also take on committee roles, including Student Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Shaftesbury Rep, and Toynbee Hall Rep, or other supporting positions like Transport Coordinator, Photographer, or Media Rep. First-year Griffin students are expected to take on at least one of these roles, helping ensure the smooth running of the Trust’s activities.

If I apply, when will I know whether I have been successful?

Interviews will take place in March. Successful applicants will be informed in April 2026

How many students live at Griffin House?

There are 23 medical and dental students from Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry living at Griffin House.

Our students are typically in their 2nd to 5th year of study, including those completing an intercalated BSc.

Griffin House consists of six flats, each with four bedrooms, except for one flat where a bedroom has been converted into a secure bike storage room.

As a Griffin Student, are you expected to care for the elderly residents?

Students are not part-time care-workers or resident doctors/dentists and should not be seen as such.

Students do not take the place of any professional social services that are available to the residents. Students do not give medical advice or treatment.

Students are not responsible for the well-being or health of the elderly residents. In emergency situations, we have a protocol that all Griffin students adhere to.
